The Classification of Canyon Dawn/Fantasy Brown
Posted on March 01, 2018
There has been confusion surrounding the classification of Canyon Dawn, also known as Fantasy Brown.
Mont introduced this material to the market seven years ago as granite since our supplier from Italy, who is very highly regarded and respected, classified it as granite.
This supplier had the exclusivity on this material for 3 years. They had done extensive testing on the material to determine how it would perform in terms of staining, etching, absorption, etc. They concluded that this material performed as good as most granites and decided to classify it as “Granite” which meant that it was suitable for kitchen countertop application.
Our supplier assured us that we should not have any issues with this at all as long the material is resin coated overseas at the factory on a proper automatic line polishing machine to ensure consistency of application all over the surface.
In the last three years, this material has become very popular nationwide and each distributor is classifying this under different categories. This has led us to research to find out the true geological composition and determine the correct classification of this stone.
Our research indicates that the true classification of Canyon Dawn / Fantasy Brown is DOLOMITE.
Dolomite is from the limestone family. It is comprised of calcium as well as Magnesium carbonate.
Due to the fact that this stone is not pure calcium carbonate based, it is more resistant in relation to regular limestone and marble with regards to:
- Water absorption
Please note that NOT ALL dolomites are suitable for Kitchen countertop application.
Canyon Dawn has proven over the last 7 years to be a stone suitable for kitchen countertop application. However, on the basis of our research, Mont is labeling Canyon Dawn/Fantasy Brown as a Dolomite.
